As Featured in VoyageLA: Journey from Engineering to Artisan Jewelry

How loss, transformation, and California coastal beauty shaped Novaura Jewelry

Recently, I had the honor of being featured in VoyageLA, where I shared the story behind Novaura Jewelry. And the unexpected path from engineering to artisan jewelry-making, and the personal transformation that shaped everything I create today.

If you missed it when it was first published, I wanted to share some of the highlights here, along with a few behind-the-scenes insights I didn't include in the original interview.

Because this story isn't just about how a jewelry brand began. It's about why it matters—to me, and hopefully, to you.

The Unexpected Beginning

For nearly four decades, I worked alongside my parents and my sister Linda in our family business, Novak Electronics. It was more than a job. It was my identity, my daily rhythm, the foundation of who I thought I was.

When the business closed in 2016, I felt unmoored. I took an engineering position for financial stability, but something was missing. I was doing good work, but I wasn't fulfilled.

Then, three years later, my sister Linda was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer.

Those years were some of the hardest of my life. Grief, transition, uncertainty. I needed something to anchor me, something that felt like mine.

So I returned to jewelry-making.

It was a childhood passion that had been dormant for years, something I'd loved as a little girl wandering bead shows with Linda. I didn't know it then, but picking up my tools again would become the most transformative decision I'd ever make.

When Therapy Becomes Transformation

At first, jewelry-making was a creative outlet and a form of therapy. A way to process what I was feeling when words weren't enough.

But as I created piece after piece, something shifted.

I realized I wasn't just making jewelry. I was channeling loss into beauty. I was honoring my sister's journey. I was reclaiming my identity as a creator and entrepreneur.

What started as therapy became a transformation.

And that transformation became Novaura Jewelry: named for "new horizons," representing life's ability to inspire growth even through adversity.

Engineering Meets Artistry

People often ask me: "How does your engineering background influence your jewelry?"

It's a great question, and the answer is woven into every piece I create.

When I design, I'm not just thinking about aesthetics. I'm thinking about:

  • Structural integrity – Will this hold up to daily wear for years?
  • Comfort – How does the weight distribute? Will it irritate sensitive skin?
  • Functionality – Can you put this on yourself, or will you need help every time?
  • Durability – Are the connection points reinforced? Will the finish last?

This is where artistry meets precision.

I hand-select every turquoise stone, gemstone, and every piece of sterling silver from trusted California suppliers. But then I apply engineering principles to ensure what you're wearing isn't just beautiful. It's built to be your go-to piece for years to come.

This isn't fast-fashion jewelry. This is jewelry designed with intention, crafted with soul, and engineered to last.

California Coastal Inspiration

Living in Southern California has profoundly shaped my aesthetic.

There's something about the coast: the way the light hits the water at golden hour, the effortless elegance of coastal living, the balance between relaxed and refined, that influences everything I create.

My jewelry reflects that same ethos: coastal sophistication.

Turquoise Pendant Necklaces - 3 held in hands

It's not overly bohemian or rustic. It's not stiff or corporate. It's the sweet spot in between, polished without trying, distinctive without being flashy, versatile enough to live in but special enough to be unmistakably yours

When I source turquoise and gemstones, I'm drawn to stones that echo the colors of the California coast: ocean blues, sunset coppers, sandy neutrals, soft pinks, and greens. Natural, organic, grounded.

This is jewelry for the woman who's found her own rhythm. Who knows who she is and dresses accordingly.

Creating for the Woman You Are

In the VoyageLA interview, I talked about my dream client. The woman I design for.

She's not chasing trends. She's not dressing for other people's expectations. She's done with that.

She's in her unapologetic self-expression era.

She's confident, creative, and accomplished. She values quality over quantity, story over status, authenticity over logos. She wants jewelry that feels like her; not borrowed, not copied, just authentically hers.

She's the woman who reaches for the same necklace before every important meeting because it makes her feel powerful and polished. The woman whose friends say, "That's so YOU," when they see her jewelry.

She's the woman who wants pieces that transition seamlessly from work to life, from the office to a date night, from polished to ease.

If that sounds like you, you're exactly who I create for.

The Collections That Tell the Story

Every collection I design carries a piece of this journey.

This collection embodies the coastal sophistication and intentional design I talk about in the VoyageLA feature. These are the pieces designed for daily wear—versatile enough to live in, distinctive enough to be your signature.

Turquoise, sterling silver, freshwater pearls, and gemstones that feel effortless and elegant. The pieces you reach for again and again because they just work.
